AMANDA BERRY SMITH
(1837-1915)
Amanda Matthews-Berry Smith was born the child of slave parents in the State of Maryland, USA. Inspired by Phoebe Palmer to fulfill her call to ministry, she began preaching in 1870 and continued despite cruel racism and barbarous sexism. Smith, despite having only three months of formal schooling, was both highly articulate and wonderfully anointed. Her gift made room for her and she gained remarkable respect from the educated and uneducated, alike. She ministered with great success throughout America, the British Isles, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burma, and India, where she was commended by Methodist Bishop Thoburn.
